Container identification system – information for citizens
The age of digital waste collection is dawning. FES is the leading full-service provider for sustainable waste disposal, grounds maintenance and cleaning in the Rhine-Main area. We stand for cleanliness and quality of life in Frankfurt and the surrounding region. It goes without saying that we scrutinise processes and optimise them where necessary to make them even more efficient and sustainable. An important lever for this is the digitalisation of processes.
One chip for every tonne.
In 2020, in a joint project with the Environmental Office, over 300,000 waste bins of all types (residual waste, paper, packaging, and organic waste bins) were equipped with a chip and a sticker. This makes household waste disposal much more transparent for the residents of Frankfurt.
Waste containers of households and affiliated businesses are now clearly assigned to a property. Their volume is recorded in digital systems, as well as the emptying schedule. Each emptying is logged on the vehicle with second-level accuracy.
Top priority: data protection
On the transponder, which is attached under the lid edge, only a serial number is stored.
In our systems, this is linked with information about:
- the type of waste,
- the container size of the bin,
- the emptying frequency,
- the associated property with street and house number, and
- the exact location of the bin.
This information is displayed on the sticker attached to the outside of the bin. Personal data is neither stored on the transponder nor on the sticker.
Information & Reklamation in Echtzeit
Our service will be significantly improved and made more transparent for you. Accurate data allows for better route planning. In case of defects or vehicle breakdowns, FES can respond more quickly. For complaints, the call center provides clear and precise information – including the exact time of a collection, etc.
We hope this will lead to greater transparency and additional quality control. If the approximately 315,000 waste bins in the city are better managed, waste disposal services can also be improved. Reports can be recorded and processed more quickly in electronic systems. We can respond more quickly to defects or vehicle breakdowns. And in the event of complaints, the call centre can provide clear, precise information – right down to the exact time of an emptying, etc.
This would undoubtedly contribute to greater fairness in charging. However, the technical systems required for this are not yet sufficiently developed or are still too expensive to install for measuring the fill level of residual waste bins. Only in the case of residual waste bins is the container size relevant for determining the charge. In large cities with many multi-unit buildings, this perfect fairness cannot be enforced either.
