How waste separation is done in Frankfurt

You look: What material is it?
Then you throw the waste into the correct bin or container.

  • The bin with the black lid is for residual waste
  • The bin with the brown lid is for organic waste
  • The bin with the green lid is for paper, cardboard and cartons
  • The waste bin with the yellow lid is for packaging

It is incinerated in the waste-to-energy plant,
generating electricity and heat.

That also means it is compostable.
It comes from nature and is organic.
In our recycling plant, it is turned into compost and biogas. We use the
biogas to generate electricity and heat. We sell
the compost.

  • Plastic packaging,
  • Packaging made of multiple materials (e.g. aluminium and paper) such as beverage cartons,

  • Glass packaging.

Glass container for glass

There are blue glass containers in many places in Frankfurt.

Glass packaging is placed in these containers.

 

These items can be used to make new glass jars.

This is also called recycling.

It is pronounced: ri-zeik-ling.

This is good for the environment.

 

It is important to separate glass by colour.

White glass goes into the opening with the white ring.

Brown glass goes into the opening with the brown ring.

Green glass goes into the opening with the green ring.

Coloured glass, for example a blue bottle, also goes into the opening with the green ring.

Bulky waste is large waste that does not fit in the waste bin.

Our bulky waste collection service will collect bulky waste from your home.

Bulky waste collection is free of charge.
You do not have to pay anything. You can have 10 cubic
metres of bulky waste collected at a time.
That is equivalent to 10 washing machines. You
must place the bulky waste on the street the evening before the collection date. It must not be placed outside before then
.

The collection of hazardous substances

Hazardous substances are substances that are harmful to humans, animals or the environment.
These include cleaning agents, acids and paint residues, for example.
Hazardous substances must not be disposed of in any waste bin.
Hazardous substances must be taken to our hazardous waste collection vehicle.

Disposal of small electrical appliances

Small electrical appliances must not be thrown into any rubbish bin when they are broken.
These include, for example, hairdryers, electric toothbrushes, MP3 players and toasters. Harmful
substances can be removed from this waste and destroyed at high temperatures.
Valuable materials can be extracted from this waste and used to make other electrical components.
This is also known as recycling.
It is pronounced 'ree-kay-ling'.
This is good for the environment.

For collection, it is important that batteries and accumulators are removed from the devices beforehand. 
You can drop off batteries and accumulators at many stores and at our recycling centers.

The small electrical devices can be dropped off at our recycling centers.
Or you can bring them to our collection mobile.
It is located in a different district of the city each day.
