Goodbye winter (service) – hello spring!

FES ends winter service for the current season and takes stock

A mild winter is ending, along with the danger of ice and snow. On March 31, FES Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH concludes the current winter service season 2024/2025.

In total, there were 13 partial and 4 full deployments this season. A partial deployment means that snow and ice occur in a limited part of the city. A full deployment affects the entire operational area. In addition, winter service colleagues went out 44 times to check bridge conditions and 22 times to inspect bike paths.

For comparison: in the 2023/2024 season there were 2 partial and 20 full deployments.

The relatively high number of partial deployments this season is explained by the weather. Moist air settled as snow in the vicinity of large industrial facilities, e.g., in Höchst, Unterliederbach, Sossenheim, and Rödelheim.

The mild winter is also reflected in the use of spreading materials. In this season, 628 tons of salt, 617,000 liters of lye, 110 tons of salt-grit mixture, and 5.7 tons of bridge de-icing material, which does not damage structures, were used.  

In the 2023/2024 winter season, 2,044 tons of salt, 798,000 liters of lye, 652 tons of salt-grit mixture, and 8.2 tons of bridge de-icing material were used.

FES Winter Service Manager Christoph Rembow is satisfied with the season just ended: “When using spreading materials, we always follow the principle: as little as possible, as much as necessary. The mild winter required fewer deployments than in previous years. Everything went according to plan, and the winter service ensured that people traveling could get safely from A to B.”

Although long-term weather forecasts are hardly reliable, the advanced spring suggests that night frost and icy conditions will no longer be an issue in the coming weeks.
