Book a time slot digitally, dispose of green waste analogously

Positive outcome after one year of “digital additional service” in Kalbach

The recycling center in Kalbach is in good spirits. One year after the introduction of the digital additional service, it is clear: the service is very well received by citizens, with an average utilization rate of 75 percent.

Visiting the recycling center during regular opening hours is not always possible. “With the digital additional service, green waste, bulky waste, and paper can be disposed of without long waiting times. An appointment can be booked in minutes via mobile phone – a practical solution in often stressful everyday life. In this way, digitization promotes sustainability,” says Tina Zapf-Rodríguez, City Councilor for Climate, Environment, and Women in Frankfurt am Main.

Benjamin Scheffler, Managing Director of FES Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH, adds: “4,100 bookings within a year show that the digital additional service is well received by citizens. Even more important than the number of bookings is that there are hardly any misplacements. It is nice to see that customers pay attention to ensure nothing ends up in the containers that does not belong there.”

The most popular days to book a digital time slot are Friday, Saturday, and Monday, followed by Wednesday. FES staff are not on site during off-peak times, but the areas are under video surveillance.

Anyone wishing to dispose of green waste, bulky waste, or paper outside regular opening hours can book a 10-minute time slot via the self-service app Maex, developed by FES co-shareholder Remondis. Then, at the scheduled time, the customer opens the gate via Bluetooth, deposits the recyclables, and leaves the site.

The self-service at the Kalbach recycling center has been available since April 1, 2024.
